چکیده

A lack of well preserved paleoclimate indicators coupled with the abundance of gypsic soils in arid and semi-arid regions has stimulated research on using dO and dD isotopic analysis of the hydration water of gypsum to interpret paleoclimate. This study stresses the importance of establishing a pedogenic origin for gypsum crystals prior to isotopic analysis and evaluates the dominant processes controlling the formation of pedogenic gypsum. Isotopic analyses were conducted on the hydration water of pedogenic gypsum (23 samples) and local precipitation and river water (5 samples) in southern New Mexico. The isotopic signature of the hydration water indicates significant enrichment compared to local meteoric water. Evaporation is the driving mechanism by which gypsum accumulates in soils, and it is the dominant process controlling the isotopic fractionation of the hydration water of gypsum. Because the amount of isotopic fractionation during each episode of evaporation through time cannot be quantified, this technique is not suitable as a method to interpret paleoclimate. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Snowball morphology and SEM analysis of pedogenic gypsum, southern New Mexico, U.S.A

Late Quaternary soils in southern New Mexico support previous work that suggested pedogenic gypsum accumulates in successive stages as a function of time, similar to pedogenic carbonate. However, gypsum also occurs as small (0·5}1 mm), powdery spheres that we term snowball morphology. The snowball morphology represents one of the initial stages of pedogenic gypsum development. Scanning electron...

Comparison of pedogenic properties of some paddy and nonpaddy soils of southern Iran

ABSTRACT- Paddy soils make up the largest anthropogenic wetlands on earth. Present study was performed to investigate and compare soil formation of paddy soils with long-term rice cultivation history with non-paddy soils and study the effect of waterlogging on soil pedogenesis. Soil samples were taken from paddy and non-paddy soils derived from the same calcareous parent materials. Some pedogen...

Stable isotopic composition of soil calcite (O, C) and gypsum (S) overlying Cu deposits in the Atacama Desert, Chile: Implications for mineral exploration, salt sources, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction

Soils overlying two porphyry Cu deposits (Spence, Gaby Sur) and the Pampa del Tamarugal, Atacama Desert, Northern Chile were collected in order to investigate the extent to which saline groundwaters influence ‘‘soil’’ chemistry in regions with thick Miocene and younger sediment cover. Soil carbonate (calcite) was analyzed for C and O isotopes and pedogenic gypsum for S isotopes. Soil calcite is...

پیدایش و میکرومورفولوژی تحول گچ در خاک‌های لسی شمال ایران

Gypsum is the most common sulfate mineral in soils of arid and semi-arid regions. Two hundred million hectares of the earth’s surface and about 28 million hectares of Iranian arid soils are covered by gypsiferous soils. The studied soils consist of alluvial plane and eolian plains in northern Iran. Soils were classified as Haplocambids, Aquisalids and Endoaquepts. In this study, genesis, format...

Diet and trophic level of scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico

We examined the diet and trophic level of Sphyrna lewini in the Gulf of California (GC) during 2001 and in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT) during 2005 using data from stomach content and stable isotope analysis of δ15N and δ13C. S. lewini diet was represented by pelagic and benthic prey species where the most important in weight was Scomber japonicus (27.70±4.54%) in GC, while in GT it was Auxis s...
